The SWCE safety demonstration was part of the 27th annual Waseca County Farm Bureau Farm and Home Safety Day at Farmamerica. Nearly 300 fifth-graders from all over the county spent the day learning best practices for staying safe at home and on a farm.
“There’s less and less farms and there’s more city kids who don’t know how to behave around equipment or animals,” said Debbie Roemhildt, who coordinated the event this year. Originally it was only farm safety but was expanded to include some household situations such as electrical wiring and chemicals.
The students rotated through six hands-on stations led by volunteers from local businesses that deal with each type of danger in their everyday work. The students learned how to handle encounters with animals, electrical wires, chemicals, heavy machinery, household power tools and sports vehicles like ATVs and snowmobiles, Roemhildt said.
SWCE representatives Joel Dulas and Gabe Roetman shared a demonstration for electrical safety on the farm, as well as what to do around downed power lines.
