Electric Vehicle Charging

Up to 80% of electric vehicle charging is done at home.

Energy costs vary widely based on the time of day, day of the week and season of the year. If you can charge your electric vehicle during off- peak hours, you can save money. SWCE has charging rates for members using a 240-volt charger to charge their electric vehicle.

What to know:

  • A 240-volt charging station (Level 2) is recommended for a faster charge.
  • A local electrician or Energy Wise MN can provide charger recommendations.
  • A Level 2 charger should be installed by a licensed electrician and it may require an upgrade to your service panel.
  • SWCE has rebates available to members that are on an electric charging rate.
  • If you are building a new home or remodeling your garage, now is the time to consider wiring for a future charging station.

How to enroll in SWCE's electric vehicle Time-of-Use program:

  1. Fill out the EV Time of Use form below.
  2. Contact an electrician to install a submeter socket and a level 2 (240v) electric vehicle charging station. SWCE is able to provide a quote for this service if you're interested in hiring our master electrician.

Meter socket must be:

  • Sub metered
  • Bottom of meter socket is tied to the charger
  • Located outside - 5 feet to center of meter
  • Only wired to the EV charger(s)
  1. Once the meter socket and charger are installed and an affidavit is completed, contact SWCE to schedule program enrollment.
